## Dr. Kryzia's Bio

Dr. Kryzia (pronounced “k r ih sh – ah”; like trisha but with a K) Olsen is a licensed naturopathic physician and acupuncturist in Oregon. She completed her six-year medical training in Portland, OR at [National University of Natural Medicine](https://nunm.edu/about/), the oldest accredited naturopathic medical school in the country. Following graduation, Dr. Olsen completed a competitive post-graduate naturopathic residency at Kwan Yin Healing Arts Center with [Dr. Ilana Gurevich, ND, LAc](https://www.openwellnesspdx.com/provider/ilana-gurevich-nd-l-ac), specializing in naturopathic gastroenterology, specifically focused in treating [Inflammatory Bowel Disease](/blog/ibd).

During her clinical training, she trained in naturopathic primary care, which combines the best of conventional and naturopathic modalities to promote optimal health. She has extensive training in digestive health, women’s health, mental health, and cardiovascular health. Additionally, she has done several western herbal intensive trainings with Dr. Jillian Stansbury and Dr. Glen Nagel, and calls upon that experience when formulating botanical tinctures (alcohol herbal extracts) for her patients.

In addition to conventional and functional medicine diagnostics, Dr. Olsen utilizes a variety of natural modalities including diet and lifestyle counseling, western and Chinese herbs, nutritional supplements, IV nutrient therapy, ozone therapy, and other Chinese medicinal therapies including cupping, electroacupuncture, and moxa. As part of her Chinese medicine education, she did extensive trainings in 5 Element Acupuncture, Shen-Hammer Pulse Diagnosis, and non-insertive Japanese acupuncture techniques. Dr. Olsen blends these modalities together to treat the whole person on all levels (mind, body, spirit) to increase quality of life and well-being.

### From Dr. Kryzia: My Journey to Medicine

Since I was 4 years old, I knew I wanted to be a doctor— though my perception of what it means to be a doctor has evolved over time, and will continue to do so with practice. While studying pre-med at UCLA, I saw what it meant to be a conventional medical doctor, and I struggled in that atmosphere which emphasized symptom management not resolution. I learned then that conventional care excels in healing physical trauma, and extending quantity of life, but rather lacks in its abilities to provide high quality preventative medicine, and root cause therapies for chronic illness. That's when I stumbled upon both Naturopathic and Chinese medicine, which strives for offering transformative care and improving quality of life. I immediately knew it was exactly the form of medicine I wanted to offer, and every day my practice reminds me of that.

### My Treatment Philosophy

I believe in the healing power of nature. I have seen it heal so many, including those who have purposely chosen the natural route, and those who felt they were lost in the standard medical system.

I believe in the healing power of community. It is part of our human nature to desire community, and I believe my role as your physician is to be a part of yours, which means actively listening to you, so that you feel heard. So often a visit with the doctor means 10 minutes face-to-face, but for me that is just not enough. Visits range from 30-90 minutes because hearing your story and building a healing relationship is invaluable and takes time.

I believe in Doctor as Teacher. I strive to empower my patients through education. Part of my role as your physician is to educate you as much as you would like regarding your health process— this includes physiology and pathology through both the naturopathic and Chinese medicine lens. If you have questions regarding your treatment, it is your right to ask, and my job to answer.
